REWARD!

For any information leading to the identity of the person or persons unknown who stole the Deer Park Neighbors car magnet in or around the vicinity of the Vehe Barn between 9:00 am and 9:30 am during on election day. NO QUESTIONS ASKED. Turn the sign in at Village Hall or leave it on our doorstep.

INTELLIGENT MINDS WANT TO KNOW! We are researching the arrival dates of the Village of Deer Park's village-wide, "educational" mailing on the subject of the referendum. The Village voted itself $600 for this mailing; our copy arrived about five hours after we had voted on Tuesday. Please email us when you received YOUR Village mailing. The physical mailing to each address came in at about 55 cents a piece, based on about 1100 households.

Sales Tax Referendum Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008

You need NOT declare for any party in order to cast your vote on this referendum in the primary. Whether voting early or on election day, you may request a "NON-PARTISAN" ballot, which will include the proposed sales tax increase.

Shall the Village of Deer Park impose a tax on persons engaged in the business of selling tangible personal property (goods) and services within the Village in accordance with 65 ILCS 5/8-11-1.3 and 5/8-11-1.4, at the rate of 0.5% of the gross receipts from such sales, for expenditure on public infrastructure, such as street and drainage improvements?
Yes _____ No _____

Election CalendarIllinois House Bill 426 was signed June 20, moving up Illinois' primary date for even-numbered years to the first Tuesday in February. Illinois' 2008 Primary Election will be held on February 5, six weeks earlier than usual. Early voting takes place until Jan. 31

What are YOUR questions about the sales tax referendum? Well, here's a good place to start! We urge you to review the draft budget for 2007-08, which was then approved April 17, 2007. This gives you a simple overview of inflows and outflows of the Village. Actually, we strongly recommend that you read the 2007 Board of Trustees minutes, which is the record of individual trustee's votes (and President Gifford's tie-breaking votes) on spending. The average reader can do this in about two hours, a small investment to be made when you are being asked to vote on a new tax.

Election 2007 Village of Deer Park Archive:

Deer Park Neighbors is not a political organization, but we are very interested to share as much information as possible during this campaign. We are primarily a news organization, so we do offer opinions on the candidates and the issues. You don't have to read them, but if you'd like to read our EDITORIALS (Al's recommendations and Deborah's take on the issues), you are most welcome. For the next election, we'd love to have a blog where we could all dialogue together.
